You didn't think all these people were doing yoga for their health, did you?

Just joking. Of course they are. And a healthy and fulfilling sex life can be an important part of a healthy and balanced life. It just so happens that among yoga's many beneficial effects is its ability to make us better lovers. In bed. Or wherever else the spirit moves you. Following are five reasons why:

Relaxes and Recharges - Sex and stress don't mix and it's a stressful world. Regular yoga is proven to reduce stress, relaxing you better than Barry White could in the wonder years. Okay, well, that part's not proven. But yoga is well known for its relaxing qualities. And any kind of exercise energizes you. Yoga is definitely some kind of exercise.

Makes You Hot - And I'm not talking about you sweating in class. Doing yoga gives you a better body. It strengthens and tones you. Maybe more important is what it does for your body image. Feeling comfortable in your skin because you're more in touch with yourself physically--not to mention healthier--improves your self-confidence...and that's hot! It also makes for a healthy and fulfilling sex life.

Keeps You Focused - Yoga is all about being present, in the moment, aware and concentrated. That kind of ability to focus--or refocus when your mind wanders to your shopping list during sex--can make you quite popular with your partner. And I don't know about you, but there are just times when I find good concentration pays off exceedingly well.

Improves Body Awareness and Sensitivity - Every time you do yoga you learn more about your body: what it can do, how it moves, what feels good. You become more sensitive to physical nuances and more in touch with where it is now rather than 20 years and 10 pounds ago. Surprisingly enough, being more in tune with your physical side comes in quite handy with sex.

It just so happens that among yoga’s many beneficial effects is its ability to make us better lovers. In bed. Or wherever else the spirit moves you. Following are five reasons why:

Relaxes and Recharges – Sex and stress don’t mix and it’s a stressful world. Maybe more important is what it does for your body image. Feeling comfortable in your skin because you’re more in touch with yourself physically–not to mention healthier–improves your self-confidence…and that’s hot! It also makes for a healthy and fulfilling sex life.

Keeps You Focused – Yoga is all about being present, in the moment, aware and concentrated. That kind of ability to focus–or refocus when your mind wanders to your shopping list during sex–can make you quite popular with your partner. Surprisingly enough, being more in tune with your physical side comes in quite handy with sex.

Increases Flexibility – Um, duh: The Kama Sutra includes some fairly knotty configurations, so if you’re going to get anywhere near getting through it in your life, the increased flexibility yoga offers will serve you well. Even if Twister isn’t your game, it’s just nice to be able to stretch out sometimes.

Now, if you know me, you know I'd tell you to schedule your Yoga classes like you do your work appoints. I often hear students at my YAS Fitness Centers say “I’m stepping into a meeting I will call you back in an hour” as they walk into the Yoga room. I have to admit, I love hearing that. Even if you love your job, spending 40-plus hours at a desk every week (which is nothing for most of us) can sometimes lead to more than just a headache. Sitting all day can also be a pain in the neck, shoulders, back, feet and eyes!! Before reaching for the industrial-size bottle of ibuprofen, try these poses, which should take about 3 minutes every few hours.

Wrists & Hands
Typing is a very repetitive motion, and we do it for hours, On top of that, we hold our hands in a very tense position, so the muscles get stiff and blood doesn't circulate.

QUICK FIX TIP: Sitting at your desk with your feet flat on the floor, hip-width apart, sit up tall and let your shoulders drop away from your ears. Bring your hands together on your lap, interlacing your fingers. Take a deep breath in, reach your arms out in front of you and press your palms away and on an exhale, raise your arms overhead and try to straighten your elbows. Hold this pose for 10 seconds and lower your arms on the last exhale. Repeat 2 x’s.

Sitting all day can also be a pain in the neck, shoulders, back, feet and eyes!! Before reaching for the industrial-size bottle of ibuprofen, try these poses, which should take about 3 minutes every few hours.

Wrists & Hands
Typing is a very repetitive motion, and we do it for hours, On top of that, we hold our hands in a very tense position, so the muscles get stiff and blood doesn’t circulate.

Feet & Ankles
High heels push body weight to the front of the foot. And the pointy styles we wear shove our feet into unnaturally narrow spaces. Now if you’re a guy, this isn’t usually a problem. High heels throw off your entire back because your feet, don’t have a solid connection with the ground.

QUICK FIX TIP: Remove your shoes. Next, sitting in a chair, cross your right ankle over your left thigh. Weave the fingers of your left hand from the bottom of your foot up between your toes as if you were holding hands with your foot. Begin making circles with your ankle. Make 10 circles in each direction. Next, release your fingers and hold onto the top of your foot. Bend your toes back towards your shins and then down toward your heel. Do this five times in each direction. Now, massage the bottom of your foot, especially the arches. Switch sides.

Neck & Shoulders
Typically, we slouch, rather than sit. I know I do. Your head is as heavy as a bowling ball, so when you push, drop, or tilt your head forward to squint at your computer screen, your neck is bearing a lot of weight.

QUICK FIX TIP: Stand with feet hip-width apart. Place your hands on the corners of your lower back with your fingers pointing toward the floor. Rotate your shoulders up, back, and down, bringing your elbows close together without pressing your hips, shoulders, or head forward. Inhale and then on your exhale and bend back slightly. Press your elbows closer, lifting up through your chest. Hold for 30 seconds.

Eyes
You may be unaware of it, but while staring at your monitor or reading, you probably tense up your face. Recent studies say hours in front of a computer screen may fatigue the optic nerve, which transmits images to the brain.

QUICK FIX TIP: Turn away from your computer so your eyes are focused on a completely different object. Sit up in your chair with your chin parallel to the floor. Now, without moving any other part of your body, look up to 12 o’clock, over to 3 o’clock, down to 6 o’clock, over to 9 o’clock, and up to 12 again. Do that five times in each direction.

Lower Back
When you’re sitting at your desk, the discs in your back are bearing three times more weight than when you’re standing. Spinal fluid—which keeps your spine flexible instead of brittle—gets squeezed out. A brittle spine increases your risk of injury because there’s less fluid to act as a shock absorber, which means bending down and lifting your 5-pound purse can cause a lot of damage one day. Twisting poses strengthen and lengthen your back to create more space.

QUICK FIX TIP: Keep your chair facing forward, but turn your entire body to the right. Keep your thighs parallel and knees over your ankles. Next, place your hands on the back of your chair. As you inhale, sit up straight and as you exhale, rotate from your body. Hold for 30 seconds and switch sides.

Hopefully, this will help or make you realize that you should get into a Yoga class!!
